Nathan was born and raised in Tucson, AZ. He started BMX at the age of five and was given the opportunity to travel the U.S. with a local team. Then, at age fifteen, he started racing dirt bikes, first starting with desert racing, then moving to motocross. This led to traveling around Arizona for the Arizona State Championship Series.

He then started his own race car career at the age of twelve, dirt track racing at different tracks throughout Arizona. Nathan also worked on his own car throughout his racing career. His mechanical aptitude began with these early racing experiences, as he taught himself to work on whatever he drove or rode.
